About

Hi, I'm Shriram, I build software for genomics. I'm a PhD student at UIUC, where I assemble and compare the genomes of Arctic and Antarctic fishes to work out how cold adaptation gets written into DNA. I also dabble in open source. Lately I've been interested in what DNA language models actually learn about the repetitive parts of the genome.

About the site

This is a personal list where I post anything and everything I feel like writing about. I'm a graduate student, my research is on genome evolution, hence the name. I also really like the culture of open source, and the Unix philosophy. I'm just a fan of them, I'm not willing to die on that hill, so I'm okay reading about people complaining about the Unix philosophy.

What's TTAGGC?

TTAGGC is the most common telomere repeat found in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Telomeres are the ends of the chromosomes.
